We continue our series on Rilke’s Duino Elegies with Edward Snow’s translation of The Second Elegy, talking with poet Mark Wunderlich<\/a>. Wunderlich, who is currently at work on a book on Rilke, is deep research into the biography, which give us rich insight into creation of “The Second Elegy.” Beginning with what Wunderlich calls the posthumous voice in Rilke’s poetry, we are able to see the poet’s unique relation to death and the unseen realm, as a way to return back to the reader information gleaned from the lyrical “other side.” How did Rilke have such unique access to this otherworldly voice? Who are these angels that stir the opening iconic lines of the first two elegies? Distilling Rilke’s philosophical insights evoked in the elegies, we see his rigorous, life-long exploration on the page: the complexities of the human condition, which includes, of course, love and sexuality, their correlation to the divine; as well as myth, consciousness, the natural world and the phenomenon of suffering and thought. Wunderlich, as a fluent speaker of German, also gives us an important angle of the German language, and opportunities it offered poets, how that renders in translation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
